The Cannabis Research Institute SA (CRI)

Over the past eighteen months, the CRI has been diligently working to align cannabis analytical capabilities with the regulations set forth by the Department of Health and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA). This effort aims to meet the standards outlined in Section 22C (1)(b) and Section 22D, in conjunction with Regulation 23 and 24 of the Medicines and Related Substance Act of 1965. These standards enable participants in the cannabis industry to cultivate cannabis and cannabis resins, extract and test various forms of cannabis, manufacture cannabis-containing medicine, and import, export, and distribute cannabis-containing medicines within the parameters of SAHPRA and the International Narcotic Controls Board (INCB).

It is essential for the government to regulate and limit the quantities of cultivated and manufactured cannabis products in South Africa to ensure that INCB quotas are maintained and that excess, unregulated products and by-products do not enter the world market. To meet both local and international regulatory standards, the CRI has carefully and proudly selected our cannabis laboratory, which will play a key role in establishing the quality and evolution of cultivated cannabis into a final, reliable, reproducible, and high-quality medicinal product.
