Forty Tons (4orty Tons)

I’m feeling incredibly frustrated and exhausted from not being heard. It seems like justice is only on the side of those with resources, fame, or money to sway the system.

Discovering that my husband’s successful underground cannabis business was funding our life was a shock, especially when he was sentenced to prison for it. This wasn’t his first time facing cannabis charges, and I was left to deal with the betrayal and trauma while he was behind bars. I may have been ignorant to his actions, but it kept me out of prison—a fate that many other women in similar situations aren’t as lucky to avoid.

While prisoners often take the spotlight in discussions about justice, the families and communities they leave behind face their own struggles. My family had to fight to survive during my husband’s time in prison. After his release, he worked hard to turn his life around, but we were soon faced with new challenges, including his involvement in The 40 Tons Conspiracy, a gross miscarriage of justice that led to Corvain Cooper’s life sentence.

Our experiences with the criminal justice system opened my eyes to the unjust sentences facing cannabis prisoners. I am now dedicated to giving a voice to those who are incarcerated, advocating for fair treatment and an end to lifelong prison sentences for a plant that is now legal and profitable for many.

Despite the progress we’ve made, we continue to face setbacks, but we are determined to keep fighting for justice and hope.
