Americans for Safe Access

Founded in 2002 by medical cannabis patient Steph Sherer, the Americans for Safe Access (ASA) serves as a platform for patients to advocate for the recognition of cannabis as medicine. ASA, boasting over 150,000 active supporters in all 50 states, stands as the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists, and concerned citizens dedicated to promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research.

ASA’s mission is to overcome political, social, and legal obstacles by developing policies that enhance access to medical cannabis for patients and researchers through legislative initiatives, educational efforts, legal actions, research support, grassroots empowerment, and advocacy services for patients, governments, medical professionals, and cannabis providers.

Through the collaboration of policy experts, public health professionals, attorneys, lobbyists, scientists, industry associations, and medical practitioners, ASA has led campaigns, projects, and programs that have dismantled political, social, academic, and legal barriers across the United States. ASA holds a significant position in shaping policy discussions concerning medical cannabis, having altered the national conversation, established a global patient network, enacted local, state, and federal laws, achieved victories in state and federal courts, delivered high-quality legal and medical education to cannabis stakeholders, reintroduced cannabis into the Herbal Pharmacopeia, established product safety standards for medical cannabis, educated thousands of patient advocates on civic engagement, and developed accredited education programs for doctors, patients, and providers.

ASA staff members are actively engaged in the medical cannabis movement, working alongside members to influence policy and public opinion, thereby steering the movement toward its objectives. By participating in this movement, individuals can help shape the future of medical cannabis in their communities, states, and country. Joining ASA provides an opportunity to contribute to the organization’s goals, ensuring progress toward a future where medical cannabis is widely accessible and accepted.
