American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU)

Following World War I, America was seized by the apprehension that the Communist Revolution in Russia might spread to the United States. This fear led to a disregard for civil liberties, as evidenced by the infamous “Palmer Raids” initiated by Attorney General Mitchell Palmer in November 1919 and January 1920. Thousands of individuals, labeled as radicals, were arrested and deported without warrants or adherence to constitutional protections. They were subjected to brutal treatment and held in appalling conditions. In response to these severe violations of civil liberties, a small group of individuals founded the American Civil Liberties Union to take a stand.
